Get Centered in the Clay Studio

Our clay studio is equipped with eleven Shimpo pottery wheels, a slab roller, extruder, space for hand building, a kiln, clay recycling room, and lots of storage space for student work.

Our one-time pottery classes, weekly youth classes, and weekly adult classes meet in the clay studio with knowledgeable instructors.

How it works

  • For round forms, you can use the wheel to achieve nearly any shape. You can use rolled, stamped, and carved clay to hand build any shape!

Clay that is not fired is called “Greenware”.

  • Your piece will slowly dry to the consistency of leather. When it’s cold to the touch but pliable, you can make holes, trim the base, and sign your piece.

Note: Pieces from one-time wheel classes will be trimmed for you!

  • Some potters like to apply a coat of slip or underglaze to leatherhard pieces, then use tools to carve through the colored layer to create surface decoration. This is done before the bisque kiln firing.

  • Place your leatherhard piece on the shelves in the back of the studio. Once they’re bone dry, we’ll load them into the kiln for their bisque firing. This first firing hardens the clay and prepares it for glazing and finishing.

Until you bisque fire your clay, it is 100% recyclable! So feel free to experiment as much as you like before this stage.

  • After bisque firing, your piece (called “bisqueware” will be placed in your cubby. You can take it to the paint studio for glazing during class or any regular business hours.

Note: Pieces from one-time classes will be stored in the paint studio and their owners will be notified to come in and paint approximately two weeks after the session.

  • After painting, place your piece on the 'ready to be fired' shelves. While most of our glazes provide a glossy finish, a clear coat is available, especially recommended for the inside of vessels.

We’ll fire your piece with other finished work in one of our two glaze fire kilns, then place it back on your shelf in the clay studio.

Note: Pieces from one-time wheel classes will be packed in a bag for you to pick up from the paint studio.
